Brie Champenoise miscanthus and water quality

In Brie Champenoise, miscanthus and water quality.

In mid-December, Perrine Craen, in charge of water resource protection for the Communauté de Communes de la Brie Champenoise (CCBC), organized a half-day technical seminar with the support of the Marne Chamber of Agriculture.

On the program:

  • CCBC presentation of water issues in the territory's catchment areas
  • Presentation of miscanthus as a BNI crop, by Novabiom
  • Two illuminating case studies:
    - Jérôme Oudart, with mixed farming and AB pork production in the Brugny/Thoult-Trosnay area. He planted 6.5 ha of miscanthus in a catchment area in 2023 and 2024.
    - Claire Maury, winegrower in the Allemant/Thoult-Trosnay area, who planted 3 ha of miscanthus in 2023 to mulch her vines.

The half-day concluded with a visit to EARL de la Grâce and a testimonial from Sylvain Le Brun - 37 ha of miscanthus planted between 2018 and 2023 - who is developing the local market with direct sales of his miscanthus and has installed a baling press.

Thanks to the twenty or so people who came along: farmers from the catchment areas and coordinators from neighboring catchment areas, as well as the CA 51.

Thanks to Mme Maury and Messrs Oudart and Le Brun for sharing their experiences. Thanks to Perrine Craen for organizing the event.

The issue of water quality is becoming ever more important, and each time these exchanges provide the keys to understanding how to co-construct an agricultural model that is favorable to water quality, to farming and to the region as a whole.
