MisTigation: A Look Back at the Seminar to Present and Share Results
The final Mistigation seminar, titled“Miscanthus and Climate Change Mitigation Through Ecosystem Services for Local Governments, ” was held on June 23 via video conference due to the heat wave. It was open to the public.
A favorable setting for discussing solutions to mitigate and adapt to climate change, featuring informative discussions.
As for mitigation, we discussed:
- Community biomass heating projects: planting miscanthus in priority areas of the region and using it for heating, with the goal of phasing out fossil fuels. All of this is done through collaboration between the agricultural sector, residents, and the local government. (Alexandra Dutay, Emilie Skowron, Caroline Wathy – Novabiom).
- Ecosystem services provided by miscanthus crops, with a focus on water quality protection: What is the genetic variability in Miscanthus sinensis with regard to nitrogen management? (Shehryar Iqbal, Marion Zapater, and Maryse Brancourt-Hulmel – INRAE BioEcoAgro).
In terms of adaptation, the project examined how miscanthus crops respond to future climates:
- by modeling the effects of climate change in the Hauts-de-France region on miscanthus cultivation (Anaëlle Mazingarbe and Hélène Desmyttère – Junia BioEcoAgro).
- by conducting a miscanthus cultivation experiment in an ecotron based on climate simulations for the year 2057 (Antoine André and Marion Zapater – INRAE BioEcoAgro).
Mistigation has also facilitated the development of new methods for studying Miscanthus, focusing on monitoring nitrogen levels in the plant and predicting traits during the breeding process.
