Miscanthus Plantations in the Douarnenez Area: Act 2
Miscanthus Plantations in the Douarnenez Area (29): Act 2
We told you about this last year: a social housing provider, Douarnenez Habitat, has installed a miscanthus-fired boiler and is working to establish a direct miscanthus supply chain with local farmers.
Following the initial miscanthus plantings in 2025, the farmer involved in the project replanted 8 ha of miscanthus this year.
These plantations are used to fuel the boiler room and offer several advantages.
On the farm:
– A new, very low-input farming method in the region.
– Protection of water quality across 2.5 ha located on AAC land, as well as promotion of biodiversity and carbon sequestration in the soil…
On the farm, miscanthus is a crop that requires little labor. A long-term, direct purchase agreement—without intermediaries—between the producer and Douarnenez Habitat ensures a promising market.
Regarding the boiler room:
– A heating system with a very low environmental impact that contributes to the energy transition.
– Locally sourced biomass, with a secure supply and stable prices because it is not subject to global markets.
– A regional initiative that can serve as a model and encourage other stakeholders to follow suit and replicate this commendable commitment.
This second year of planting solidifies the project to establish a small-scale miscanthus industry with numerous benefits.
